Meet the Correspondent: Luis Ruiz > Malaga, Spain$show=/search/label/Luis%20Ruiz

"Since I was a child, I have always loved drawing. As an architect, I was trained to sketch on site in my first year of my studies. I have always considered sketching a wonderful tool in my job to understand things, more in the field of spatial relations than in their material aspect. On the other hand, I have always brought a sketchbook with me in my travels as a much more effective way of keeping a memory than a photograph. But lately my travel sketches tended to be too few and too quick. I have recently found Urban Sketchers, and then discovered the immense joy of sketching outside with no particular task. Reading Usk’s manifesto, I feel especially sensitive with the point of keeping a record of time and place, and I’m changing from sketching just architecture to understand the city as a big scenario for human activity. I live in Málaga, a city in the south of Spain with more than half a million residents and 2,500 years of age; but also the center of a busy and lively metropolitan area, home of an active harbour and a big tourist destination. Now that I have two small children and I do not travel as much as before, I’m trying to show this mixture of old and new in my drawings. It is so rewarding to share my work with so many excellent artists and receive continuous feedback from other members! And, last but not least, to learn from other parts of the world. I'm delighted to join Urban Sketchers." • Luis' art on flickr.

Drawing on Stage in Tuscany

5° Urban Sketchers Workshop in Volterra
Live sketching with Simo Capecchi & Teatri35

Volterra, July 23 /27, 2014

Follow Simo Capecchi in a full immersion not only in urban sketching but into the art of live sketching and sketched reportage.

The small ancient city of Volterra has played an important role in past artists Grand Tours - Tuscan landscape belongs to the most beloved sceneries in Italy by travellers of all times. Famous for its Renaissance, Medieval and Etruscan heritage, Volterra also hosts a renowned international theater festival that presents music, dance, video, art performances and cultural events.

The Volterra Teatro Festival (2014 - XXVII° edition) is based on an artistic and educational project in the city jail, aimed to transform the prison from penal institute into a cultural place. Since 25 years, prisoners have become actors, creating the internationally famous Compagnia della Fortezza and citizens are invited to watch their performances, inside and sometimes outside the Medici Fortress, a jail since Renaissance times. Every year, at the end of July, Volterra becomes a stage, showing performances, artistic events and exhibitions. This year, Urban Sketchers is officially invited to report live the Volterra Teatro Festival’s main event: La Ferita, a collective ritual that will involve all citizens, actors and artists.

The Pinacoteca di Volterra hosts the famous Deposizione, a Rosso Fiorentino's masterpiece that inspires us and that has already been the focus of a theatre and drawing project in Naples, together with the theatre company Teatri35. Last spring Simo Capecchi and Caroline Peyron held a joined workshop with Teatri35: i DisegnAttori. The result is a performance of tableaux vivants from Mannerism masters Rosso Fiorentino and Pontormothat includes live sketching: Il Panno Acotonato dello Inferno.

Teatri35 will lead a tableaux vivantes/theatre workshop for Volterra Theatre Festival 2014 (the program will be announced soon here and here). Urban Sketchers participants will follow the actors – inspiring models of our sketched reportage - during the rehearsals and their performance in the Pinacoteca di Volterra.

Our hosting institution Villa le Guadalupe Spazio per le artian association dedicated to the arts and specially to theater, will be the perfect place to welcome us once again in its enchanting location. Two sessions out of six will be dedicated to landscape painting as seen from the Villa and to details of the garden and Villa Le Guadalupe's interiors, as to alternate gesture drawings to slow and more observational watercolors.

Goal of these four Tuscan days is a full immersion in drawing as a fast and expressive way to report live an event. We'll go beyond a simple aesthetic or naturalistic result by forcing ourselves to quickly and vividly capture the scene in front of us, an exercise that will pay later on, even while drawing more accurately and slowly.
Participants will practice gesture drawing and different techniques of sketching people in movement. We'll focus on live reportage as an immediate way of reporting an event, combining in our drawings both text and images.
